Children's Dentistry

Caring for children is an area we are very passionate about at Tweed Smilecare, our entire friendly team love to see children, and are committed to ensuring your child feels relaxed, comfortable and make appointments a fun experience they will look forward to attending.

You may like to schedule your child's first visit to coincide with your own regular check-up appointment, this will help them establish a trusting rapport with our team and become more relaxed when they see you having your teeth checked too.

Oral health plays an integral role in your baby's general health and development. Correctly aligned healthy teeth will enable them to chew food efficiently and aid in sounding out words as they learn to talk.

The team from Tweed Smilecare like to see your child for their first visit around age three; this allows us to assess their development and look for any signs of irregularities with their teeth, gums and jaw.

A good oral health routine for children should commence before their first tooth emerges by wiping your baby's gums gently with a soft damp cloth to remove any milk build-up. Teeth develop at different ages; however, they generally will begin to erupt when your child is around four-seven months old. Their two front lower teeth (central incisors) are often the first teeth to come though, and by their third birthday, they usually have all twenty of their baby teeth.

It is a good idea to introduce your child to brushing as soon as their first tooth comes through so they become used to brushing on a daily basis. You should brush your children's teeth and encourage them to brush correctly using a soft bristled baby toothbrush. Introduce a small, pea sized quantity of low strength fluoride toothpaste only when they are able to spit it out, around age three.

Preventing early childhood tooth decay is essential for long-term oral health for your child. Infant tooth decay can result in premature loss of their primary teeth; the impending result is developmental problems with their emerging permanent adult teeth. If your child loses a tooth too soon, it can cause crooked teeth and gum problems.

An ongoing oral hygiene routine of brushing twice a day and regular appointments every twelve months with our dentists and hygienists will keep your child's teeth and gums healthy and allow us to address problems before they develop. This can result in a significant reduction in corrective treatment such as braces and much less expense.

All our team at Tweed Smilecare are committed to providing your child with the best start to a lifetime of good oral health, helping them keep their natural teeth looking good for life.
